Unified entrance exam not to include TOEIC

Jiji Press TOKYO (Jiji Press) — The organization administering the Test of English for International Communication, known as TOEIC, said Tuesday it has decided not to have the test used in Japan’s unified English examination for university entrance.

The TOEIC test, operated by the Institute for International Business Communication, was scheduled to be introduced to evaluate students’ English proficiency for university exams from fiscal 2020, which starts in April that year.

But the IIBC declined to participate in the exam, as it proved more difficult than expected to incorporate TOEIC in it.

TOEIC, measuring reading, writing, listening and speaking skills, is conducted over two days, and examinees use personal computers to answer the questions.
