Seko: No withdrawal

Jiji Press TOKYO (Jiji Press) — Japan will not engage in discussion with South Korea on withdrawing stricter controls on semiconductor materials exports to South Korea, Economy, Trade and Industry Minister Hiroshige Seko said Tuesday.

Following a request by South Korean President Moon Jae-in for bilateral talks on the issue, Seko said that the export restrictions are “not up for discussion,” adding that “withdrawal is not being considered at all.”

The decision on stricter controls “is a review of domestic operations,” he said, reiterating Tokyo’s stance that the stricter controls were put in place to make sure that the products subject to the export controls, which can be used for military equipment, are appropriately managed.

The minister confirmed that South Korean authorities have reached out to his ministry for explanations.
