Enough metal secured for 2020 medals

Jiji Press TOKYO (Jiji Press) — The 2020 Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Organizing Committee said Wednesday that it has collected enough metal from electronic waste to produce all medals for the Games.

The campaign secured 32 kilograms of gold, 3,500 kilograms of silver and 2,200 kilograms of bronze over the two years through March 31, with over 6.21 million mobile phones collected.

A total of about 78,985 tons of small electronic devices including mobile phones was gathered from 1,621 municipalities across the country.

About 5,000 medals will be produced.

The designs of the Olympic medals will be unveiled at a ceremony on July 24, one year before the Opening Ceremony. The Paralympics medals’ designs will be unveiled in August.Speech
