The Japan News Divers Ken Terauchi and Sho Sakai secured a spot for the 2020 Tokyo Games after finishing seventh in the final of the men’s synchronized springboard at the swimming World Championships in Gwangju, South Korea, on Saturday.

Terauchi, who has represented Japan in five previous Olympic Games starting with Atlanta in 1996, and Sakai, who participated in the 2016 Games, are the first Japanese athletes to earn a ticket to the Tokyo Olympics.

Earlier on Saturday, the pair received the second-best score with 384.09 points in the preliminary to advance to the finals. Under the Japan Swimming Federation’s criteria, finishing eighth or better in the finals was needed to qualify for the Games.
